The Genesis of Self-Immolation

In this video I present the findings of my research into self-immolation as a tool for contention. Although this project doesn’t necessarily have much to do with religion or atheism, it does briefly discuss how religion may have inspired many people to set themselves on fire in the US between 1965 and 1970. And I offer this little jab at religion:

If there is a correlation [between self-immolation in the US and religion], then it is an interesting one because these were followers of the God of Abraham, who promises no eternal reward for suicide, but rather eternal suffering.

If you’ve ever wondered why people are willing to set themselves on fire to make a political statement, you might find the answer in this video.

  1. Atheism’s response to the victims of mental illness:

    God made them do it.

    • Rayan Zehn says:

I hardly think anyone in my study was suffering from mental illness. I went to great lengths to control for people who were committing suicide for selfish reasons. I only considered people who explicitly stated that they were committing suicide in order to make a political statement and to compel society to take action against the state. These were not mentally ill individuals.

      • Zehn,

You “hardly think?” That’s the truest statement I’ve ever seen from an atheist.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t matter that you hardly think.

What we have here is yet another case of you cravenly using a study to push the atheist agenda, which is to destroy Christianity.

      • Rayan Zehn says:

If you read my study (on ProQuest or via Old Dominion University–the citation for my study is in the description of the video) or if you watch the video, you’ll see that I did not use this as a tool against Christianity. I barely mentioned religion except to discuss why people were compelled to commit self-immolation in the US. Even in my quote on this blog I say “If there is a correlation then it’s an interesting one” meaning the evidence has not suggested that religion caused these people to commit suicide. I think you want to complain just to complain.

      • Zehn,

Here is you arguing with yourself and losing, once again:

“And I offer this little jab at religion:”

How is it that you atheists can say one thing one minute, and then turn around and deny it one minute later?

      • Rayan Zehn says:

I think the jab about the god of Abraham is pretty clever. It’s also completely true. The religions of Abraham promise hell for suicide. So I was raising the question: Why are Christians willing to commit suicide for a cause if they know they will continue to burn in hell? I think it’s a fair and interesting question (that unfortunately went beyond the scope of this research).

      • Zehn,

So now you admit that you’re a liar.

Truthfully, that may or may not be a personal foible, but lying is a requirement of atheism.

You can’t do atheism and tell the truth at the same time.

      • Rayan Zehn says:

Yes. Confessing that I took a jab at religion while raising a very valid question is now considered a lie. If that’s the case, then I’m a liar.

Why get all butt hurt about a very valid question?

      • Zehn,

You remind me of Hilary Clinton after she oversaw the cold blooded murders the US Embassy in Benghazi:

        “What difference does it make?”

What’s a little lying and murder among atheists, no?

      • Rayan Zehn says:

Sigh. If you’re not going to comment on the content of my research then there’s no point in responding to you. I’m going to go out and murder a few people. I expect that when I return you will have something to say about the actual content of this post. (Don’t worry. I promise I’ll only murder another atheist so no Christians are in danger).

      • Zehn,

I have commented on the content of your research and you agreed with me:

It’s all a pack of lies.

      • Rayan Zehn says:

“It’s all a pack of lies.” I doubt the scientific community would agree with that. In fact, they already agreed with my argument. This is published original research (as you will see at the bottom of the description in the video). I’m not a fan of paywalls, and I thought my contribution should be public knowledge, so I made this video.
