My Muslim friend on evolution: “What’s evolution?”

Many who’ve read my blog might be surprised to discover that I live with two ultra religious Muslims. One hails from Afghanistan and is pursuing his undergraduate studies, and the other comes from Algeria, where he received a M.S. in engineering. Between my vegan cooking, the Mediterranean cuisine, and the Central Asian fares, our house is constantly filled with the best aromas. We get along really well, despite the fact that I find Islam to be a very dangerous religion. So far, in this blog’s short lifetime, I’ve covered that topic twice (here and here). To be fair, they might not be aware that I’m atheist. They’ve never seen this blog as far as I know. And they see my bookshelf, filled with books on religion, atheism, and even a book or two by the Dalai Lama. Mostly, however, I read about international politics (which was my graduate studies focus). They probably believe I’m merely a well-read guy with some sort of belief in supernatural agency. Indeed, the most I’ve ever told them is “I’m not a religious guy, nor do I seek religion.” I’m not hiding my atheism; I just enjoy the discussion about Islam too much to taint it with a discussion about my beliefs.

The other day I watched a video from the BBC television show, The Big Questions, titled “Is It Time For All Religions To Accept Evolution.” In it, a Muslim man argues that Islam accepts evolution as a valid scientific theory, as applied to non-human animals only. That is, evolution explains how the diversity of species came to be, but it does not explain how humans came to be. Last night I asked my Algerian roommate about this. I did not expect his answer.

“What do you mean by evolution?” he asked.

“You know, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution?”

“I don’t know what that is,” he insisted.

I give him a quick rundown of what evolution is.

“I’ve never heard of evolution. But I will ask [his spiritual leaders at the mosque he attends].” Then he went on to explain the creation myth of Adam and Eve. “When god created Adam, he realized he had created the perfect creature. Because humans are perfect they don’t evolve. I don’t know about animals. They are not perfect like us, so they may need to evolve to survive.”

I was very surprised by this entire conversation. This is a man with a Masters degree in Engineering. He’s an intelligent man. He’s been in the US for years, yet somehow he has never heard of the theory of evolution. I can only assume that his upbringing in Algeria, which enjoys a 99% supermajority Muslim population, failed to provide him with an adequate understanding of elementary biology. This is worse than Texas! He was not taught that evolution is wrong. He was straight up never taught about evolution.

This is unsettling to me. To make matters worse, he had no idea that scientific data suggests the earth is older than 6,000 years (much, much older). But he was unfazed by the new information I was presenting him. He finally said “Don’t ask how you were created. Ask why you were created.”

In other words, don’t seek answers about the physical world. Seek answers about the spiritual world (which can never be measured, let alone observed).

I’ll finish this by stating that none of this is his fault. He was raised in a society that values the Hajj and its mustati more than scientists and university professors. No, this is the fault of Islam itself and the violence-laden Quran. Islam stunts the intellectual growth of its adherents.

Bible Contradictions #16: What does the bible say about men who are castrated?

Bible contradictions 16Are you a Christian whose manhood was taken? It’s unclear what this means to your afterlife.

We can’t blame this contradiction on Jesus changing things because Deuteronomy is contradicted in Isaiah 56:3-5 as well as the aforementioned Matthew.

The contradiction might be explained by errors in translation. The same hebrew word for Eunuch also translates into slave, which would make the verse in Deuteronomy nothing more than bigotry against the lowest class. At best we can say it’s a glaring contradiction. At worst it’s basically racism. It could very likely be both (I mean they did choose a word with two meanings; maybe ‘Eunuch’ and ‘slave’ were synonymous). Unfortunately, we’ll never know because everyone who wrote the bible is dead.

Bible Contradictions #15: Is incest ok?

Bible contradictions 15

Leviticus 18:9 clearly states not to have sex with your sister. Leviticus 18:12 takes this a step further: “You must not have sexual contact with your father’s sister; she is your father’s blood relative.” Clear as day. Don’t have sex with your father’s blood relatives.

Leviticus 20:17 states, “If a man marries his sister—his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter—and they have sexual contact with each other, it is a disgrace. They will be cut off in the sight of their people. Such a man has had sexual contact with his sister; he will be liable to punishment.”

Leviticus 20:19 bans sex with your aunts and uncles.

And finally, as shown in the image above, Deuteronomy 27:22 reinforces the Levitical prohibition against incest.

But that’s not the practice we see in many parts of the bible. We already know that incest was necessary at least twice in the bible (Cain took a wife who was either his sister or Eve, and the flood left only one family standing; procreation had to have come from incest). But there’s more familial relations than just that.

Abraham’s brother, Nahor, married his own niece.

Lot’s daughters got him drunk so they could have sex with him and get preggers.

Abraham married his half sister (his father’s daughter).

Isaac married his cousin, and their son, Esau, married his cousin.

Amram married his aunt.

Amnon raped his half sister.

That’s a lot of incest. That’s like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre-level of incest. As shown in Leviticus 20, cases of incest are to be met with punishment, yet we only find punishment in the case of Amnon raping his sister. But that was an honor killing for rape, not incest. The rest of the bible shows a nonchalant acceptance of daddy doodling his daughters.

So why would a bible ban something that is inherent and widespread in the bible? Do as I say, not as I do?

The Prophet Muhammad was a raging sociopath

Yesterday I watched the latest video by Jaclyn Glenn titled “Atheist vs Muslim.” I’m not going to get into the content of the video. If you’re interested, click the link I’ve provided. In the description of the video, Jaclyn provides the following link, a list showing the murders ordered by Muhammad. The list is fairly long. The number of deaths attributed to Muhammad alone should speak about the moral character of the alleged prophet. But when you actually get down to reading why he ordered these killings, it is clear that the Prophet Muhammad was a raging sociopath, on par with Joseph Stalin or Saddam Hussein. Some of these killings come straight from the Quran. Let’s examine some of these murders.

Muhammad signed thirteen death warrants for doing nothing more than writing or reciting poetry that criticized Muhammad. Not all of the condemned were assassinated, however. The few who survived were only allowed to live because they converted to Islam. To me, this sounds like a pretty insecure guy who kills anyone who calls out his bullshit. The only thing that can save you is to pray five times a day!

Next on the chopping block is Al-Harith bin Suwayd al-Ansari, who lost his head merely for leaving Islam. What is interesting about this is that Muhammad forgave Al-Harith, before changing his mind and ordering the hit. I know that execution is common for the crime of apostasy in Islam, but name me any other religion that, in modern days, still supports the killing of people who leave their faith. In the 21st century this seems to be entirely the domain of Islam.

Two years later Muhammad ordered a group of Muslims to gun down (figuratively speaking, of course) three people. Their only crime? They worshipped multiple gods.

In a horrific display of depravity, between February and March 627, Mohammad and his posse slaughtered all the men of the Banu Qurayza tribe (between 600-900 people). Then they took as slaves all the children and women and divided the land and property amongst themselves. What crimes did the people of the Banu Qurayza tribe commit? None. Muhammad committed this act of genocide strictly because the angel Gabriel told him to.

Later that year Muhammad ordered the assassination of Abdullah ibn Ubayy, but quickly changed his mind because Abdullah had a large following of his own (and probably didn’t want to get 86’ed himself).

In January 630 Muhammad ordered the execution of Sarah because she used to touch his willy in Mecca.

That October he called for the death of the King (or Prince?) of Dumatul Jandal solely to steal his treasures.

He ordered a blind man to kill his wife for insulting him. The blind man obeyed.

Ibn Sunayna was killed because Muhammad ordered his followers to “kill any Jew that falls into your power.” A Muslim heard this and complied. I wonder if Muslims still listen to this credo.

He commanded his followers to kill a man from the Aslam tribe because that man committed adultery. We still see this today in the Muslim world.

Finally on the list, Muhammad called for the assassination of Kinana ibn al-Rabi because Kinana had hidden treasure, and Muhammad wanted it. I can only imagine an It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World-esque plot unfolding once Muhammad secured the location of said buried treasure!

The “Prophet” Muhammad committed acts of terror and genocide so vile that, if he had committed them today, he would be one of the most hated and wanted men alive. As I’ve written before, Islam is a dangerous religion, perhaps the most dangerous religion out there today. Unfortunately, the behavior of its prophet offers it no hope for salvation. Muhammad was a sociopathic madman, intent on wiping out entire cities and raping its women, murdering anyone who questions him, and murdering people for monetary gain, a la The Professional, only with an equally murderous boss, Allah.

Why couldn’t Allah pick someone a little more level-headed to whom to reveal himself? Maybe it’s because it took someone so bat shit crazy to carry out Allah’s will. Or maybe Muhammad just made the whole thing up!

Atheists, eternally damn yourselves to stop the constant preaching

Because I’m atheist I feel like I’m the focus of evangelism more frequently than the average person. My family seeks to convert me. Friends try to bring me to Christ. I’m quite open with my atheism, so when a stranger begins speaking of Jesus, without fail I will let them know that I don’t believe in god. This usually leads to more passionate proselytizing. And it ends with a hug and a prayer that god shows me the way. But what if it doesn’t have to be this way? What if, instead of merely saying I’m atheist, I could say something that will make any attempts at converting me completely futile? Well, maybe there is something I can say.

Two verses in the bible tell us that, through Jesus, all sins will be forgiven, except blasphemy against the holy spirit. Jesus says in Mark 3:28-29:

Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.

This warning also appears in Matthew 12:31-32:

And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

This ‘unpardonable sin’ was made famous by Brian Flemming in his documentary film The God Who Wasn’t There (I highly recommend this film), in which he publicly denied the holy spirit. This led to the creation of The Blasphemy Challenge, which dares non-believers to deny the holy spirit on Youtube videos.

Once these words are uttered, there is no turning back… ever. No matter what you do, the Christian bible offers no hope of salvation. Born again? It doesn’t matter. You’re unforgivable. Dedicate your life to living and teaching the word of Christ? Too bad. To hell with you!

Denouncing the holy spirit is like depriving the Evangelical Fire of oxygen. They who wish to save you will fail at every attempt because salvation is impossible. On the other hand, they may still try to convince you so that you can save others, but what’s the point in believing in a god that cannot, no matter what, forgive you?

So there you have it. Atheists, deny the holy spirit! I have. Next time someone tries to evangelize you, remind them that you’ve committed the ‘unpardonable sin.’ Hopefully that will end the conversation.

Side Note: This only applies to Protestant versions of Christianity. I discovered in my readings that the Catholic Church believes “There is no offense, however serious, that the Church cannot forgive.” See this Vatican Catechism (section 982). Then again, I’ve never been preached to by a Catholic. It’s not really their thing, it seems.

Bible Contradictions #13: Is god’s law perfect?

Bible contradictions 13

The Old Testament is pretty clear about god’s law. It’s perfect. But then this Jesus fellow comes along in the New Testament and says “wait one minute!” and offers a 2nd covenant after confessing that the first covenant was faulty. What does this say about the state of the 2nd covenant? Could it too have faults?

The devil is in the details: Why some Christians reject empirical evidence

This post is to help non-believers understand why some Christians reject empirical evidence.

Most Christians accept the evidence for evolution, genomes, cosmology, germs, and the big bang, etc. Most Christians divorce their faith from the physical universe. Most Christians are not like Ken Ham. Indeed, even the most evangelical of my family members would bring up Darwinian theory before the bible when asked about how humans came to inhabit the earth. This is a good thing. It’s science that promotes progress, and Christians reading this should not feel like I’m attacking them personally, especially if they stand on the side of science when it comes to the physical universe. Besides, your faith is spiritual, not physical.

But that does not mean that Christianity itself is the cause of Christians accepting the scientific theory and the evidence it produces. Quite the contrary; Christianity is built on a foundation that explicitly calls the scientific method and the evidence it produces to be the literal workings of a devil trying to deceive us. Let’s look at the gospels, shall we?

First, let’s examine 2 Corinthians 4:4.

“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

I must point out that “god of this world” or “god of this age” (god with a little g) is satan. He is of this world, or of this age, because he exists in the physical world. God, and indeed you, exists in the spiritual world. The devil, in 2 Corinthians, deceives humans with physical nature because he is not a part of the spiritual world. He uses things like empirical evidence to confuse humans and lead them astray from Christ.

Next, we’ll look at 1 Timothy 4:1:

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;”

Note how this verse says that the “Spirit speaketh expressly.” The Spirit is obviously the Holy Spirit, and it speaks in a clear and concise manner, so that you’d have to be an idiot to not understand it. And the spirit says that the “doctrines of the devils” (read: physical and empirical evidence) cause humans to “depart from the faith” through seduction.

In other words, science, and anything else not taught by god, is taught by the devil. These teachings, if adopted by a person, lead him or her away from Christ.

This is reinforced in Romans 1:21:

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

This verse is very damning towards scientists, even Christians who believe in science. It says that god has given his entire message in the bible, and if you don’t believe in the bible then you’re an idiot. It also implies that scientists claim to be wise, but they are actually foolish for not giving god his due credit.

So what does this all mean? What does this have to do with Christians, both those who accept science and those, like Ken Ham, who reject it?

Well, we will now turn to Ephesians 6:10-17:

“10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”

The bible here explains why fundamentalist Christians reject the teachings of things like the big bang and evolution. It says that Christians must defend against the devil’s schemes. Science itself is not of the devil, but it is used as a tool to intrude upon the spiritual being of the Christian. In order to defend against satan, take your “shield of faith” and “helmet of salvation” and resist empirical evidence. Indeed, verse 17 says to protect your thoughts even when presented with empirical evidence.

According to Bobby Allison (The Preaching Atheist), from whom I adopted many of the concepts for this article, these concepts are widely known and accepted by the fundamentalist Christian wing, where he spent 30 years of his life. And it is preached to their followers to prove that the evidence for a 4 billion-year-old earth and evolution are from the devil and must be rejected and resisted. To accept them is to fall into the devil’s trap.

So why do most Christians accept the scientific method and the evidence it produces? Is it because the devil has deceived them and blinded them to the workings of god? No. It’s because most Christians are actually rational people. It’s difficult sometimes to believe that because it’s the fundamentalists who scream loudest. Unfortunately, by screaming the loudest it’s the fundamentalists who slow down human progress.

Bible Contradictions #12: How many sons did Abraham have?

Bible contradictions 12

Abraham could have avoided the whole child abuse and attempted murder of his “only” son, Isaac, if he had paid a little more attention to god’s command. You see, multiple bible verses show that Abraham had more than one son. He had Isaac. And Ishmael (who was born before Isaac). And Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Abraham should have done nothing, since god’s request to kill Isaac was completely impossible. It is not possible to murder your only son when you have more than one.

The only way that believers can defend this contradiction is if they say that god does not recognize illegitimate children (as shown here). That’s messed up, god.

Bible Contradictions #11: How long will the earth last?

Bible contradictions 11

You can’t trust the god of Abraham to answer questions about geology and astronomy. This is especially true with whether or not the earth will last forever. He just can’t seem to make up his mind. First, in Deuteronomy, he insists that the earth will last forever. But then in Psalm he changes course, insisting that it will one day perish (and as an added bonus, heaven will perish too!). There may well be hope for Marvin the Martian yet!
